Students' Council

The Council organizes a plethora of activities.

In 2007-08

  • The Students Council began its activities of the year by organizing a lecture "Emerging Technology : Nanotechnology" by Dr. Kamdar in collaboration AIESEC.
  • The Independence Day celebrations began with flag hoisting followed by a talk "1857 : How it Changed the Course of History" by Dr. Arvind Ganachari. The programme concluded with a lively cultural programme put up by the NCC cadets.
  • The students celebrated the Teachers Day with a cultural programme and a flash presentation.
  • The NIIT Aptitude Test for Scholarship Programmes was organized for the students of B.Com and B.Sc. (IT).
  • A seminar on 'Students Abroad' by Edwise was organized for the students.
  • There was an interactive session for students organized by the Big FM which saw enthusiastic participation.
  • The Ganesh Utsav attended by students, teaching and non-teaching staff began with the traditional aarti followed by bhajans and dances.
  • A nine-day Certificate Program on 'Capital Market' by Interconnected Stock Exchange of India Limited was organized by the Department of Economics. 69 students participated and their performance at the written examination conducted was commendable.
  • Students participated in a procession for Mumbai Unplug, a programme to create awareness for judicious use of electricity.
  • Students and staff participated in a Walkathon organized by Population First on the theme of Ladli, the Girl Child.
  • The students celebrated Rose Day with great enthusiasm.
  • "FANTASIES - The Intercollegiate Festival" was held on the 13th December, 2008 with the theme "Desi Urbania". Some of the new events included last year were 'Soul Music', 'Robotic Track', 'World Dance', 'Band Event' and 'Spoof a "K" Serial. Nearly fifty colleges participated in the 38 events.

Cultural Association

The beginning if the year is marked by the selection of participations for the various inter-collegiate competitions. With the encouragement from the college, the students participate in various cultural competitions organized by the University as well as other colleges. The forum also puts up an entertaining programme at the Annual Prize Distribution.

The film club, "Magic Lantern" was started with the intention of providing students an exposure to world-class cinema. It was inaugurated by veteran actor and director Mr. Naseerudin Shah who spoke to the delighted audience on "Parallel Cinema". This was followed by an interactive session. The students were more enthused as they had already watched the veteran's film, "Sparsh". The club screened Majid Majid's Iranian film "Children of Heaven" and "Roman Holiday" English film.

Gymkhana Committee

Students participate in various inter-collegiate events. Some students of the Junior College have reached the divisional and state level in various events.

The Annual Sports Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm by the college students with entertainment programmes for less privileged girls. Commitee also organize Self Defence Training programme for less privileged girls.

N.S.S.

Some of the programmes organized by NSS unit in the last academic year are :

  1. A film show and a talk by the National Association for the Blind.
  2. An Orientation Programme by Mr. Santosh Pathare.
  3. A programme by the Brahmakumaris.
  4. A talk on "1857: How it Changed the Course of History" by Dr. Arvind Ganachari on the Independence Day
  5. The annual Blood Donation Drive in collaboration with Rotary Club of Mumbai Uptown and LTMG Hospital, Sion.
  6. A free Thalassemia test by the 'Think Foundation' for all the T.Y.B.Com students.
  7. Two area based projects, at Salvation Army, King's Circle and Sulabha School for Mentally Retarded, Tilak Nagar.

Literary Association

The committee organizes many intra-college competitions. Elocution, Debate, Essay writing, Poetry writing and recitation are organized in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati as well as in French.

For the first time a Bhajan singing competition was organized.

French Day
was celebrated on 22nd September 2007. Dr. Mangala Sirdeshpande was the chief guest. Another first of its kind was a cultural programme in French by the students of F.Y.J.C.

Speakers Forum

The commitee selects and guides students for various inter collegiate elocution, essay and debate competitions. The major events of the forum were :

  • The Intra-collegiate A.D. Shroff Memorial Elocution competition was organized along with The Forum of Free Enterprise.
  • Ms. Vishaka Puri of F.Y.B.M.S won the 1st prize. She represented the college at the inter-collegiate level in January 2008.
  • The SIES Inter-collegiate Debate was organized on 5th September 2007 with 13 colleges debating on the given topics.
    1. Artistic Restriction is against Freedom of Expression
    2. Globalisation Will Power Indian Economy
    3. Feminism in India is Mere Tokenism

The judges were Mr. Gopalan T.R., General Manager, Central Bank of India, Dr.Girishankar, Educational Counselor and Prof. Preeta George, Faculty, S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research. The first, second and third prize winners were SIES College of Commerce and Economics, St. Xaviers College of Arts, Science and Commerce and Swami Vivekananda College of Arts, Science and Commerce respectively. Mr. Ameya Naik of St. Xaviers College of Arts, Science and Commerce was adjudged the Best Speaker.

Magazine Committee

Published annually, the college magazine, Spectrum provides an effective outlet for young talented students to get their original articles and creative work in print. It is also a record of the important events in the college and of the success of our young achievers with a special focus on the achievements of staff of the college as well.

Students Aid Fund & Book Bank Committee
Students who need financial assistance and books for their academic benefit seek help through this fund. This fund also sponsors some short term courses like Public Speaking to these students. Students are expected to apply in prescribed forms, available from the college library.
Alumni Association
The alumni association has been able to bring former students back to their alma mater year after year. Our former students gather at the college every year on 26th January. The alumni has its presence felt in a number of cities the world over, besides Mumbai where the largest number of alumni are based.
Students Counselling Committee and Comprehensive Mental Health Program

The committee counsel students with academic or personal problems on a regular basis. In addition, the following activities were held.

  • A workshop on Stress Management was conducted for the students of the Intensive Coaching Course.
  • The ATKT students were provided Remedial Counselling to motivate them to perform better at their exams.
  • A week-long workshop on Relaxation Techniques and Meditation was conducted for the students of the T.Y. classes by Prof. Jayashree Giri.
  • For the students appearing for the H.S.C. Board Exam a workshop on 'Managing Exam Stress' was held to help students deal with examination stress.
  • COUNSELLING ACTIVITIES :
    • On 12th January 2008 Young Buzz and Disha conducted 3 seminars for the students on
      1. How to handle conflicts.
      2. How to handle emotions.
      3. GD and PI.
    • At the SIES High School, Psychological Tests were conducted for 477 students after which they attended seminars on.
      1. Study Skills
      2. How to face exam stress.
    • Seminars on
      1. How to handle teenage blues
      2. How to edradicate worries
      3. How to handle anger and
      4. How to face stress were conducted for 540 parents of the students of the SIES School
    • Navchetna Shibir was organized for the non-teaching staff by Ms. Alka Meta from Art of Living.
Women's Development Cell
The cell conducts various developmental programs for girls.
Grievance Redressal Cell
The complaint registers to record grievances are kept at strategic places in the college, like the library and the office. Any complaint registered is looked into, both for solution and preventation by the cell.
Placement Cell
Students with potential and capability are finding better career opportunities with every passing year. The last academic year saw many students from T.Y.B.Com disciplines and the B.Sc. (IT) class being placed with Deutsche Bank, Accenture, TCS and Patni.

Staff Academy

"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity".....Heave

Having declared last year as the year of "Health", the Staff Academy initiated a number of "Health" activities for the staff.

  • The year began with an Induction Programme by Prof. Shanti Suresh for the teachers who joined the college this year.
  • The talk on 'Orthopaedic Perspective to Fitness' by Dr. Nanda Kishore Laud, an eminent Orthopaedic Surgeon, was very informative and it was followed by an interactive session.
  • Prof. Jayashree Giri took the initiative to motivate the teachers to follow simple Yoga and physical exercises.
  • A one day trip to Nisararogpchar Gramsudhar Trust at Uralikanchan was a very energizing experience.
  • Dr. Ashwini Nabar, a well known Gynaecologist spoke on 'Menopause : Myth and Management' and the interactive session that followed helped clear many doubts.
  • Bone-Density test for all the staff members was conducted by the technical staff of Elder Pharma.
IQAC

The committee follows Internal Quality Maintenance and Improvement as laid down by NAAC. The Co-ordinator and the committee members conduct internal audit as required by ISO specifications.

PROGRAMME / LECTURES / WORKSHOPS / SEMINARS FOR UNAIDED COURSES

BMS

  • The year began with an Orientation Programme for the FYBMS students.
  • A cleanliness drive "Clarus" was inaugurated in September 2007
  • As part of the Industrial visit, students of the TYBMS clas visited Ahmedabad from 19th to 22nd September 2007
  • A Guest Lecture by Prof. Rege on 'Management of Co-operative' was organized for the TYBMS students.
  • The faculty also attended many seminars and workshops.

B.SC (IT)

  • An Orientation Programme to apprise the first year students about the college and the course was organized.
  • A meeting with parents of attendance defaulters of the three classes were held, to have improved attendance in class.
  • A workshop on Career Counselling, Group Discussions and Personal Interviews was conducted by Mr. Guru Prasad for B.Sc. (IT) students.
  • A workshop on Personality Development was conducted for SY and FY B.Sc. (IT) students.
B.COM (B&I)
  • An Orientation Programme for the F.Y. class was the first event of this academic year.
  • A Parent-Teacher meeting was held to involve the parents, in the improvement of the attendance of students in class as well as in the academic performance.
  • Expert Lectures in the subjects Security Analysis and Portfolio Management, Financial Reporting Analysis, Financial Service Management were organized for the students of the T.Y. Class.
B.Com (A&F)
  • The F.Y.B.Com (A&F) students attended an Orientation Programme organized to help them know the college and the course better.
  • Infosys organized a Campus Ambassador Programme and Mr. Jocelyn D'souza of the TY class was selected as Campus Ambassador. He received training at the Infosys Campus at Mysore.
  • Expert Lectures for the TY students were held in the subjects of Economics and Accounts.
  • The departments of B.Com (B&I) and B.Com (A&F) organized an Inter-Collegiate Faculty Development Seminar on 'Emerging Trends in Banking and Finance" on 7th December, 2007. The guest speakers of the seminar were Mr. S. Ranganathan, Head of Research, L.K.P. Shares and Securities and Mr. Dara J. Kalyaniwala.
